Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens

albin polasek-1There are many museums but none as unique as the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens. From the circular driveway to the arch entranceway and sculptures that line the walkway a few of the 400 art pieces in the house and in the sculpture gardens. Albin Polasek a painter and sculptor born in Moravia that is now part of the Czech Republic. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 22 and was head of the sculpture department at the Art Institute of Chicago for 30 years before retiring at the age of 70 and moving to Winter Park. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places the house and sculpture gardens overlook Lake Osceola in Winter Park.

albin polasek-2Visit the museum during the week for a guided tour. I went on a Sunday afternoon and walked around the museum and sculpture gardens. The sculptures made of bronze and cement. In the museum, I read everything about his early life as well as Ruth Sherwood’s life. Ruth Sherwood, an artist in her own right was a former student, lifelong friend and later became his wife whose sculpture featured in the garden. I recommend the museum, hours of operation on the website.
